PLEASE READ BEFORE BOOKING YOUR SHORE TOURS!
FAQ
1) Do you book your own Shore Tours?
People are always asking me if they should book their shore excursions thru the ship or with private tour operators. Although there is definitely some valid reasons for booking ships tours, especially in certain ports of calls for safety reasons.
2) Are private tours less expensive?
I have found that for me personally, I like the money savings and the intimate experiences of booking my own shore tours. A word of caution though as you make this decision for yourself. ..
3) What are the risks in booking your own tours?
If you book your own excursion you do so at your own risk, the ship will not wait for you if your tour runs late.
Also, if you are not happy with the services provided you must deal directly with the tour operator. Where as problems with the ships tours are handled once back on board. Please consider carefully WHO you book with! Do you home work and use personal referrals when at all possible.
4) Do I have to book shore tours?
No, not necessarily. If this is your first time to a new port of call you may want to do a simple island tour by cab or tour bus. Research your port of call to find out what the local attractions are. Perhaps there is a "must do" for that city or island. Certain cruise itineraries are often just the means of transportation, you really need to book shore tours to get the true feel for the area. I can't imagine going to Alaska without getting in a sea plane or charter boat to sea things you won't from the ship. I would be like going to Rome and not seeing the Colosseum! Once you've visited the same island more than once, it's nice to relax at a favorite beach or just stroll around the city.
